In a new video celebrating the series’s 30th anniversary, NetherRealm Studios teased what is likely Mortal Kombat 12. The video features members of the development team thanking fans for their support and concludes with Boon stating, “we’re not quite done yet,” followed by a CG scene of sand falling in an hourglass. The imagery is significant for Mortal Kombat fans as the series’s most recent game, Mortal Kombat 11, featured a primary antagonist who could manipulate time. Assuming that Mortal Kombat 12 will launch in 2023 as Warner Bros. Games stated, NetherRealm Studios will likely provide more information soon. Mortal Kombat 11 sold 15 million copies worldwide as of 2022, and a second live-action movie is in development. The fighting game genre looks set to have a significant year in 2023, with Street Fighter 6 scheduled for release in June and Tekken 8 on the horizon.
