After Mortal Kombat 1 was fully revealed, NetherRealm was quick to confirm many details regarding the game. In particular, this is the beginning of a new universe that was formed after the events of the canonical ending of Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath, although it is not a continuation of the events of the DLC. In any case, in the “New Era” of this game, according to Liu Kang, the characters will have completely different roles compared to their counterparts from the previous timeline. This reversal of roles will obviously affect the interaction of some characters, which Ed Boon also commented on.
This was done in response to a question on Twitter, where a user suggested that Mileena from Mortal Kombat was always created by the villainous sorcerer Shang Tsung in previous versions, including the three original games and Mortal Kombat 9. However, the question arises who created Mileena if Shang Tsung was not exists in the new era of Liu Kang. Boon happily answered that question, stating that the answer will be revealed in Mortal Kombat 1’s story mode.
According to Boone, not only will Mileena’s new origins be explored in Mortal Kombat 1, but several characters will also receive new origins, if his “many origins” statement is to be believed. The game’s trailer hints at this to some extent, where mortal enemies or rivals like Scorpion and Sub-Zero team up as comrades instead of going straight into battle. There is also a hint that Milina will be the queen of Edenia, and not Kitan. This should provide some interesting iteration and dynamics between these classic characters.
