Mortal Kombat 1 officially launches tomorrow, Tuesday 19 September, but a lot of people are already playing it, so let’s take a look at three topics that have been resonating a lot with fans in recent days.
Unfortunately, we have to start with something not very positive. The fact that the title is coming to Switch in addition to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series made fans happy at the announcement. The port was handled by Shiver Entertainment and Saber Interactive. However, the players are no longer so happy with the result. The problem is its quality, which – to put it diplomatically – is not very presentable and flattering. Images of the Switch version’s heavily stripped-down graphics have flooded the internet, and people are questioning whether it’s actually desirable to get the game to the Switch at all costs when the result is this.
Of course, everyone understands that in terms of performance, the Switch cannot compete with the rest of the platforms due to its size and age, but the lower quality is not reflected in the price tag either. Fans complain that WB Games wants $70 for this version as well, and the result doesn’t quite match that. The game doesn’t really look good and the port isn’t very decent. In some places, the graphics are more reminiscent of humorous potato mods. Perhaps it would be a mitigating circumstance, at least in part, if MK1 ran flawlessly on the Switch, but the fighting game also has problems with framerate and all kinds of bugs and glitches. Rumors that the developers don’t want to show too much of this version didn’t help the situation much either. Digital Foundry magazine is preparing its detailed analysis, which will no doubt be conclusive and appropriately accurate, but until then we have to make do with the footage that is floating around the Internet.

It’s admirable that someone would try to offer a native version of a game that probably most players would expect more of a streaming version from the cloud. But will it be enough? We’ll see. However, a lot of people are now logically curious as to what the Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy will look like, which is due to arrive in mid-November and comes from the same publisher.
But in order not to talk about MK1 only in a negative spirit, the unofficial upgrade of the PC version is worth mentioning. A modder with a nickname ermaccer came with a community update, thanks to which even scenes that were originally locked by the authors to 30 fps run at 60 fps. This applies to intros, cut scenes, fatalities or fatal blows. Ermaccer himself warns that his solution may cause some glitches, but if the authors don’t come with an official update, it’s better than nothing.
And finally, the latest news is rather interesting. The author of the series Ed Boon himself pointed out on Twitter that Mortal Kombat 1 contains, among other things, a nice reference to the film Kill Bill directed by Quentin Tarantino, or rather its sequel. The cameo fighter Shujinko can do a fatality where he kills the opponent using the five point and broken heart technique. This is how Uma Thurman kills David Carradine. Even though the legend itself is older and Quentin Tarantino didn’t come up with it, Mortal Kombat 1 depicted the use of the technique exactly like the movie Kill Bill: Vol. 2. That is, except for the exploding heart at the end, which is already purely in the style of the famous action movie.
