Released on Tuesday (19), Mortal Kombat 1 became a laughing stock on the internet due to the result delivered in the version for Nintendo Switch. In addition to the Nintendo portable, the game is also available for PS5, Xbox Series S/X and PC. Specifically in the case of the Switch version, the game is being massacred due to the number of bugs and the poor graphical performance presented.
Just like what happened in the case of some NPCs in Starfield, part of the criticism was directed at the behavior of the characters’ eyes, with a bulging appearance. The result was completely below what is presented in the version for the Sony console, for example. The video below, posted on X (Ex-Twitter), compares precisely this aspect.
After Mk11, Nintendo Switch not being able to handle Mortal Kombat 1 was fully expected, but something about the game costing the same as other platforms ($70) doesn’t feel right pic.twitter.com/zrBR9EIeYq

In addition to the graphic issue, many criticisms were directed at performance. The game tries to maintain a rate of 60 fps on the Nintendo handheld, but presents drops that cause the framerate to be between 50 and 28 fps, in more intense moments. The loading time is also very long, from 30 seconds to 1 minute between fights.
It is also possible to notice a clear step backwards in the issue of textures and character modeling in MK1 on Switch, when compared to the previous game in the franchise, MK11, in its portable version. These games were developed in different versions of the Unreal Engine. MK11 in Unreal Engine 3 and MK1 in Unreal Engine 4. In Brazil, the Nintendo Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1 costs R$299.90.
In its portable mode, MK1 runs at dynamic 720p, which may drop below that at certain times (480p). When connected to the Dock, dynamic resolution increases to 900p, although most of the time it falls between 720p and 640p.
Ed Boon promises correction
The co-creator of Mortal Kombat and head of NetherRealm Studios, Ed Boon guaranteed that the game would receive fixes for the Nintendo Switch version. In a statement to BBC Newsbeatthe executive said the following:
“[…] Some of the concerns and questions that have arisen will definitely be addressed. It would have been ideal for us to have released the version we absolutely wanted. But anything we are identifying as a problem is on our list and will be fixed.”
