Morspoort garage is cleared of crumbling nets

Part of the Morspoort garage has already been cleared of the crumbling plastic net. (Photos: Chris de Waard).

The camouflage nets that hide the concrete and steel construction that make up the demountable Morspoort garage will be removed in a week or two. The municipality of Leiden reports this in a letter to local residents. At least as far as they are still there, because some of them have already been removed.

On the side of the Morsweg and the Bloemfonteinstraat, they had already been removed, because small particles of the plastic nets crumble. They enter the environment and thus pollute the surroundings of the garage. Pieces also fall into private gardens and the canal.

It is not the first problem with the nets with which the Morspoort garage is camouflaged. Immediately after completion, some eight years ago now, nets were stretched around the parking colossus. They were removed before they hung there. They did not meet the quality requirements of the municipality and the color was also wrong.

Incidentally, the existing networks will not be replaced. According to the municipality, there is no sustainable alternative for this. Moreover, the garage has had its day at its current location. The temporary garage was built there in 2012 for a period of ten years. In the future, a new residential area will be built in that part of the city. The location where the former tax office still stands will also be involved in this development in due course.
