World Cup debutants Morocco hoped to continue their sensational journey. But in the round of 16 against France, it stopped.
And a lot of it.
1-0 to France came after just one quarter through attacking star Kadidiatou Diani.
Just five minutes later, midfielder Kenza Dali stayed ahead and doubled the lead on a pass from the same Diani.
Eugénie Le Sommer then put the game’s third goal from close range after an invitation from Morocco’s backline. Again Diani was involved as she hustled a defender and got a rise on one leg which bounced straight into the gap for Le Sommer.
The match ended 4–0 to France after Le Sommer settled the final score with a header in the second half.
The host nation Australia awaits in the quarter-finals on Saturday. The other quarter-final pairs are Spain-Netherlands, Japan-Sweden and England-Colombia.
