Leadership
Morocco is pursuing its commitments in favor of sustainable development. In New York, the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, stressed on Monday that Morocco has made it a “strategic choice” under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
The details.
A series of reforms have been adopted by Morocco in recent years to strengthen sustainable development. This dynamic testifies to its commitment to this issue. As the Minister for Energy Transition and Sustainable Development pointed out on Monday in New York during the high-level segment of the Political Forum for Sustainable Development (FPHN) which is being held from July 17 to 20 in the American metropolis at the initiative of the United Nations Social and Economic Council, these reforms have made it possible to lay the foundations for economic development, improve social conditions and accelerate the promotion of environmental issues.
Ms. Benali recalled that Morocco has put in place, under the leadership of HM the King, a new development model which defines four main areas to achieve sustainable progress by 2035 at the economic, social, territorial and relating to human capital. In this sense, she specified that through this new development model, Morocco is betting on a balance between economic development, social prosperity and preservation of the environment, while working to strengthen governance and the convergence of policies.
She also pointed out that Morocco’s commitment to the process of accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been strengthened through the national sustainable development strategy, which is now the subject of consultations with all the national stakeholders. In addition, the Minister indicated that the Paris Climate Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are two essential points to promote global climate action, noting that Morocco has updated its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC ) using a participatory and comprehensive approach that has enabled it to raise the level of ambition in terms of reducing greenhouse gases by more than 45% by 2030.
She also noted that the Kingdom has drawn up a long-term national strategy for low-carbon development by 2050, in accordance with the requirements of the Paris Agreement, in order to guide and plan the policies and measures necessary to contribute to the achievement of the desired objectives. During her speech, the Minister mentioned the importance of a global mobilization of the international community citing the current challenges.
In this regard, she notes the lack of access to technology, data and financing, which constitutes an obstacle to the acceleration of growth, particularly in African countries, stressing that Morocco continues, in this context, to strengthen South-South and triangular cooperation, while working to promote stability, justice and human rights in the world. It should also be noted that this Forum is organized this year under the theme “Accelerating recovery from Covid-19 and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels”.
It is the central United Nations platform for the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 SDGs, adopted by the UN General Assembly on September 25, 2015. This UN meeting takes place every year under under the auspices of Ecosoc and every four years with the participation of Heads of State and Government under the auspices of the UN General Assembly. Indeed, the Heads of State will meet on September 18 and 19 in New York to monitor the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.
