As part of respect for human rights, the Ministry of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment and Skills in Morocco is intensifying its efforts to guarantee decent work and protect workers’ rights.
In a speech delivered during the eighth International Parliamentary Forum on Social Justice, the Minister of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment and Skills, Younes Sekkouri, detailed the actions undertaken by Morocco to promote decent work and protect the fundamental rights of workers.
Over the past two years, the ministry has carried out a total of 97,000 control visits aimed at thoroughly inspecting companies subject to the labor code. These explorations made it possible to identify and deal with infractions and failures, with more than 9,000 observations issued against employers not respecting labor standards, and 464 reports drawn up for violations. This approach clearly reflects the government’s desire to uphold workers’ rights and guarantee safe and fair working conditions for all.
As part of the fight against the scourge of child labor, the ministry has released an annual budget of 3 million dirhams to support the initiatives of associations working to eliminate this devastating practice. The results herald a promising future, with the removal of 125 children under the age of 15 from domestic work and 646 children aged between 15 and 18 from hazardous work between 2021 and 2022. These figures demonstrate the significant progress made in protecting children and in the promotion of their fundamental rights.
The minister highlighted that the promotion of decent work is an absolute priority included in the government strategy, in accordance with the principles and provisions of the Constitution of the Kingdom adopted in 2011, as well as with national legislation. This strategy aims to promote employment, strengthen social protection, combat precariousness and promote social cohesion and economic integration, thus recognizing that these elements are crucial to guarantee sustainable and balanced development.
By being an active member of the international community, Morocco undertakes to respect the obligations arising from its membership in international organizations. In this regard, the kingdom has ratified a total of 65 international labor conventions, including those covering fundamental principles and rights of workers. In addition, Morocco undertakes to regularly submit reports on the implementation of these standards, demonstrating its desire to respect international labor and human rights standards.
On a practical level, Morocco is undertaking concrete measures to consolidate decent work at all levels. This includes not only legislative reforms aimed at strengthening worker protection and promoting social dialogue, but also concrete actions on the ground to guarantee effective respect for workers’ rights, the fight against child labor and the promotion of safe and healthy working conditions.
In short, the country, through the efforts of the supervisory Ministry, confirms its unwavering commitment to decent work for all, thus underlining its role as regional leader in the promotion of fundamental rights and sustainable development.
