After the catastrophic earthquake that struck Morocco on Friday night, Moroccans showed widespread solidarity to help those affected by this tragedy.
Video clips and photos published on social media showed how citizens rushed to transport humanitarian and relief aid, including food supplies, blankets, and other necessary items that the afflicted people desperately needed.
While awaiting the deployment of foreign rescue teams on the ground, the Moroccan authorities began erecting tents in the High Atlas, where entire villages were destroyed by the earthquake.
Other video clips also showed the Moroccan army moving to provide all forms of assistance to thousands of people affected by the earthquake, which measured 7 on the Richter scale, according to the Moroccan National Center for Scientific and Technical Research.
In addition to the Moroccan authorities, ordinary citizens were present in the affected areas to provide the basic response to what was described as the strongest earthquake that the North African kingdom has been exposed to in more than a century.
From France to the United States and Israel, several countries offered their assistance to Morocco affected by the earthquake that left at least 2,122 people dead.
Morocco decided to respond to four offers of assistance, made by Spain, Britain, the UAE and Qatar, to confront the repercussions of the earthquake, according to what the Ministry of the Interior announced on Sunday evening.
The largest death toll was recorded in Al Haouz Province (1,351), south of Marrakesh, where the epicenter of the earthquake was identified, according to what the same ministry announced earlier on Sunday afternoon.
This region extends mostly along the High Atlas Mountains, embracing many mostly remote villages, amidst rugged terrain, and most of its houses are traditional and cannot resist earthquakes.
More than 18,000 families in the region were affected by the earthquake, according to the public television channel Medi 1 TV, where tents were erected to shelter these families in the affected areas.
