Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred (37) was sentenced on Friday by a court in Paris to six years in prison for raping and assaulting a young woman. That reports the French medium RFI. Lamjarred became a suspect in the case in October 2016 and was imprisoned until April 2017.
The singer, who is very popular in North Africa and the Middle East, was sentenced to seven years in prison on Thursday. He was reduced to a six-year prison sentence a day later.
The artist has ten days to appeal against this ruling. He was arrested immediately after the hearing and is now in custody.
Lamjarred enjoyed his international fame in particular through hits such as Ana Machi Sahel in LM3ALLEM. The latter song crossed the 1 billion stream mark on YouTube in May last year, as the first Arabic-language song ever.
Since the case came to light years ago, there has been a lot of controversy surrounding Lamjarred in his own country. Despite everything, many artists continued to openly support the King of Arabic Pop, as he is called.
