Moroccan out of Guantanamo Bay, first release under Biden

Moroccan Abdul Latif Nasser has been released from the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, where the US military has been holding terror suspects, often without trial, since 2001. The Pentagon, the Ministry of Defense, reports that Nasser has been transferred to Morocco.

It is the first time a prisoner has left Guantanamo Bay since President Biden took office. 39 people are still incarcerated there.

The 56-year-old Nasser had been in the military complex in Cuba since 2002. According to US documents, made public through WikiLeaks years ago, he would have come into contact with al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in the 1990s. He would later have fought with the Taliban in Afghanistan.

After the US invasion of Afghanistan, which followed the September 11, 2001 attacks, he was arrested and transferred to Guantánamo in May 2002.
