Moroccan Ministry of National Education Criticized for Refusing to Meet with Education Coordination

The unified coordination of education and support frameworks in Morocco strongly criticized the rejection, by the Ministry of National Education, of the meeting scheduled for last Friday with the coordination of education teachers. She describes this attitude as “confusion” and believes that the ministry had previously made a commitment to dialogue with the coordination before backtracking.

In a press release, the coordination considers this decision as an attempt to avoid responsibility, denouncing the failure of the ministry to defuse the tensions threatening school time. It also highlights the blatant contradiction between the approval, by the Ministerial Committee, of the presence of coordination representatives at the dialogue table on Thursday, December 14, 2023, and the refusal to receive them for the dialogue on Friday, December 15 evening. This inconsistency is interpreted as a manifestation of confusion and powerlessness within the government.

The coordination affirms that it does not get involved in any political, union, or special interest struggles, but insists that it does not recognize the results of any dialogue that does not include the coordination organizations acting on the field, nor the legitimate demands of educational workers.

The unified coordination of education and support frameworks in Morocco presents itself as an independent entity, expressing the demands of thousands of women and men working in education. She emphasizes having never been part of the problem and accuses the government of having directly underestimated the just and legitimate demands of the teaching staff and support staff in Morocco, thus causing tension detrimental to the rights of more than 7 million of students.

Abdellah Ghmimat, secretary general of the National Education Federation (FNE), had earlier announced that he had received a telephone call from the secretary general of the ministry on Friday at 2:45 p.m., informing him of the refusal to receive coordination at the meeting scheduled for 3 p.m. hours. The ministry only invited a delegation from the FNE to the dialogue. This decision is part of the consultations of the ministerial commission responsible for modifying the statute, which had previously held a dialogue session with the coordinating bodies last Thursday before withdrawing last Friday to continue the dialogue sessions with trade unions.
