Moroccan Health Authorities Take Measures to Prevent New Wave of COVID-19

The COVID-19 virus reappears in Morocco in the height of summer, after having almost completely ceased to be spoken of for weeks. After the global state of health emergency was lifted at the beginning of last May, the number of cases of contagion has increased again in the last month. Given this, the Moroccan health authorities have taken measures to prevent the spread of a new wave of the coronavirus, as reported Hespress.

The Ministry of Health and Social Protection indicated, this Friday, that it continues to monitor the epidemiological situation after the appearance in several countries of the world of the EG5.1 (Eris) subvariant of the Omicron variant of SARS-COV-2, underlining the need to take all doses of the vaccine to boost immunity against the COVID-19 virus, according to the agency MAP. In Morocco, no case of contagion by the variant has been detected, apostille.

Likewise, the Government sent a circular to the regional health directors last Friday, in which it warned that although COVID-19 is no longer a global health emergency since last May 5, it continues to represent a great threat to the public health worldwide, after the increase in the number of cases registered between July 10 and August 6 by 80 percent, according to the World Health Organization.

Given the new variants of the virus (Eris), which appeared for the first time in Morocco at the beginning of March 2020 and led to the closure of borders –including land borders with Ceuta and Melilla–the Ministry of Health and Social Protection has urged regional directors to keep active surveillance and control measures against the virus, which has registered 27 cases in Morocco in the last week, according to official data from the Ministry.

Among the measures that the Ministry of Health has urged regional directors to take to deal with any possible spread of the virus, is the availability of rapid tests (PCR or TAR) in various health centers and that they are available to all people suspected of being infected with COVID-19.

The Ministry of Health urged relevant officials to respect the treatment protocol for the care of those affected, and to notify the ministry’s central services on a weekly basis of data related to surveillance operations, serious cases, and deaths.

According to data published by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection last Friday, covering the period from August 5 to 11, 2023, the cumulative number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Morocco, since the announcement of the first case on March 2 of 2020, it amounts to a total of 1.275 million cases, with a weekly positivity rate of around 5.4 percent.

80% increase in infected worldwide in the last month

The record of the World Health Organization (WHO) has caused an 80 percent increase in the number of people infected by the virus globally over the past month, prompting the Moroccan Ministry of Health to take measures to deal with any possible new wave in the kingdom. It has urged its regional directors to organize coordination and awareness meetings for health professionals in the public and private sectors, as well as to educate patients on healthy behaviors to follow during the acute stage of the disease.

The Ministry has also urged to strengthen vaccination plans against COVID-19, providing vaccines in all health centers, both urban and rural, and incorporating vaccination against the aforementioned virus in the services of mobile medical units.
