Exports from the handicraft sector are performing well at the start of 2023, the result of the various strategies and policies aimed at promoting the sector. Details.
It is a great feat recorded by the export crafts sector. Indeed, referring to figures published by the Observatory of Crafts, exports in this sector recorded during the first two months of 2023 a growth rate of 36% year-on-year, i.e. a value exceeding 201 million dirhams. A performance mainly due to values up more than 33% for the month of February alone.
And it is Pottery-Stone that continues to rank at the top of the product families that have contributed the most to this growth. “It is the same in terms of outlets for handicrafts with the USA, which has maintained the greatest contribution, and also in terms of export cities with Casablanca still in the lead”, highlights the report.

According to the data presented on the sector, Pottery & Stone, Carpets and Traditional Clothing are the families of products having recorded the largest shares in the export turnover of these two months, i.e. respectively (64 MDH, 44 MDH and 30 MDH) as well as the largest percentage point contributions in marked growth (14%, 11%, and 4% respectively).
And it is the city of Casablanca which is the first exit point for handicraft exports with a share that exceeds half of global exports. It was also the city that contributed the most to the recorded growth. A little further, Marrakech is positioned in 2nd position and Tangier and Fez in 3rd position. As cities of registration, Marrakech preceded the rest of the cities, followed by Fez, then Casablanca.
As for the destinations which received the products of Moroccan handicrafts, it appears that the USA, France and the Arab countries were the destinations having the most marked the largest shares in the turnover in the export of the period January-February 2023. The first two destinations also recorded the largest contributions in the recorded growth (24% and 9% respectively).
More in detail, 68% of shipments to the USA passed through Casablanca, made up of Carpets (44%) and Pottery-Stone (42%). Marrakech shipped nearly 19% of shipments, with Pottery-Stone first (30%), followed by Carpets (17%), products in the “Miscellaneous” category (16%), and Wood (13 %).

France hosted 44% of handicraft exports through Casablanca, led by Traditional Clothing (41%), Pottery-Stone (21%) and Carpets (19%). Marrakech, meanwhile, shipped a 34% share, consisting mainly of products in the “Miscellaneous” category (26%), Basketry (20%), and Pottery-Stone (15%). As for shipments from Fez (17%) to this destination, they mainly concerned traditional clothing (86%).
And finally, exports to Arab countries passed through Tangier (41%) with mainly traditional clothing (98%). Through Casablanca (37%), shipments focused mainly on Traditional Clothing (54%) and Pottery-Stone (30%). By Marrakech (10%), it is the articles of the category “Miscellaneous” (34%), Pottery-Stone (28%) and Dinanderie (16%) which were mainly exported.
