Khartoum –
An original woman Morocco tells a dramatic story of survival in the midst of a fierce battle that hit Sudan the last few times. This 28-year-old woman who works as an academic was rescued after being sheltered by a local Sudanese family for a week trapped in conflict.
As reported AFPThursday (27/4/2023), Leila Oulkebous, who is a doctoral student, was rescued from the Sudanese crisis with several others and had flown to Paris, Frenchon Wednesday (26/4) local time.
Fierce fighting between troops of Sudan’s warring military generals has killed hundreds of people and sparked a mass exodus.
Oulkebous (28) told AFP that he had just arrived on Tuti Island, north of the capital Khartoum, where he was doing research for his geography thesis, when the violence broke out about two weeks ago.
“I just arrived, I turned around and I saw explosions, I heard loud bangs, sounds of gunfire,” he said.
Among the 245 people evacuated with the help of the French Embassy, Oulkebous called it a “miracle” he was still alive.
Oulkebous said he was trapped for days on Tuti Island because he could not return to his hotel after the fighting broke out. It was a Sudanese family who rescued Oulkebous and took him in for more than a week, even providing home-cooked food and guaranteeing his safety.
“Thanks to them I was able to deal with the shock I felt,” he said.
