Morning update: Monster inflation – now under control?

Good morning,

I had this brief moment of panic when I was shopping the other day. When you reach for the olive oil. That was true always how expensive

I bought the oil anyway and forgot the question for now. Until this week the Federal Statistics Office gave an answer to my question. Actually: Yes Olive oil price increased by a whopping 35 percent within a year.

However, there is a plausible explanation for this: bad harvests in southern Europe. And so, fortunately, olive oil is only out of the price statistics. Other prices rose only at a much lower rate – and Energy even became much cheaper.

That was average The rate of inflation in August it was only 1.9 percent. And so for the first time in more than three years below the limit of two percent. That is just the limit European Central Bank struggling for.

Which brings us to today’s most important economic meeting: The ECB Council decides today in Frankfurt on the so-called investment interest rate. Most people who do it full time expect the ECB to cut this all-important interest rate. Ultimately, it controls how much you and I earn in interest on our savings – and what we pay when we take out loans.

Nearby: Christine Lagarde

If the interest rate falls, that would be good for all those who want to take out loans. It would be good for the economy, which would then hopefully invest more. But wouldn’t lower interest rates also raise prices again? In other words: Is the monster called inflation really under control?

Monetary policy is always a question of timing. When inflation rose two or three years ago, the ECB may have reacted too late. Now the question is whether the monetary authorities will catch the right moment this time. Let’s take a closer look at what the head of the ECB, Christine Lagarde, has to say today.

Get through the day well and without panic moments!

Yours truly, Florian Neuhann, head of ZDF’s economics and finance team

Which is still important today

A traffic light displays a security package in the Bundestag: The SPD, Greens and FDP introduce the security package to tighten migration policy in the German Bundestag. A debate is planned from nine o’clock in which the Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) will also want to give an opinion.

A ray of hope

Winona Ryder at the premiere of Beetlejuice 2 in London

“Beetlejuice” is back! In the sequel to the 1988 fantasy horror, the ghost haunts the Deetz family again nearly four decades later. Even if the plot is a little thin: Tim Burton relies on tried-and-tested visuals, a cast of old and new actors and a soundtrack that is very strange in the scene.

He said

Our politics sometimes seem aseptic, clinically pure, elegant, synthetic. And we need to change that. We must go out into life; where it is high; where it boils; where he sometimes smells, sometimes sneezes. We have to go where it’s hard. Because there is only life where it is hard.
