There were no injuries, firefighters said, but an unknown number of people had respiratory problems from smoke inhalation.
The fire caused great panic among the residents. The refugees are often on the roads around the camp. Hundreds of migrants tried to flee to the port of Mytilene but were stopped by the Greek police.
According to the aid worker Karen Andersen of the Boat Refugee Foundation, the emergency hospital is also in danger. Large numbers of camp residents are trying to get to safety in a neighboring olive grove. “We are monitoring the situation closely and see what we can do to provide assistance as soon as possible.”
Arendsen says it was unrest in Moria on Tuesday evening and that refugees protested out of dissatisfaction with the lockdown that has been instituted since the corona virus has been detected. Since then, she says, there has been a tense situation in the camp. “There is no medical plan from the Greek government to follow up and avoid panic,” Arendsen said. “The information from the Greek government is also bad.”
Possibly lit
There are reports that fires have been lit by refugees who disagree with the corona measures in place in the camp, the BBC reported.
News channel CNN Greece reports on its website that several fires are currently raging on Lesbos. The extinguishing on Lesvos is expected to last all night. The strong winds further fuel the fires and make it even more difficult for the fire service. British news agency Reuters reports that 28 firefighters, aided by volunteers, are trying to extinguish the fires in and around Moria.
