Morelia Film Festival screens Pedro Páramo

Mexico City, The Morelia International Film Festival opens today the second day of its 22nd edition with the screening of films such as the Mexican Pedro Páramo, directed by Rodrigo Prieto, and Cónclave, starring the British Ralph Fiennes.

The first film is based on the novel of the same name by the writer Juan Rulfo and the second promises to once again showcase the mastery of the actor from Wuthering Heights, The Reader and The English Patient, this time, in the role of a cardinal in charge of leading the ritual. for the election of a new Pope.

The festival, held every year in the capital of the state of Michoacán and considered the most important of its kind in the country, opened the day before with the presentation of Emilia Pérez, the French director Jacques Audiard and the performances of the actresses Karla Sofía Gascón and Adriana Paz.

During the opening ceremony Audiard received the Award for Artistic Excellence, “for his images of a Paris of which no one is the owner and in which destiny imposes its rule; for looking at the so-called ‘others’ with understanding and humanist passion,” according to the president of the event, Alejandro Ramírez.

Winner of the Jury Prize and Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, the film tells the story of Rita, a lawyer hired by the leader of a cartel who seeks to disappear by undergoing a sex change and thus become a woman.

The official selection of the contest is divided into the Michoacan and Mexican Short Film, Documentary and Feature Film sections.

Among the latter are Chicharras, by Luna Marán; The Kitchen, by Alonso Ruizpalacios, and Violent Butterflies, by Adolfo Dávila.

The festival will take place in in-person screenings in spaces such as Cinépolis Morelia Centro, Teatro Mariano Matamoros, Centro Cultural Universitario and Plaza Benito Juárez, and in free virtual screenings through Nuestrocine.mx, from the Mexican Institute of Cinematography.

During the film festival, which will end on the 27th, the American director, screenwriter and producer Francis Ford Coppola will receive the UNAM Film Archive Medal, according to the event’s official site.
