Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said WhatsApp’s main competitor was not Telegram or Signal. He said the main competitor WhatsApp is iMessage, the messaging app available on every Apple iPhone.
Zuckerberg said one proof of iMessage is WhatsApp’s main competitor is the level of use of WhatsApp in the US. He said US citizens use iMessage more than WhatsApp.
“IMessage is the key to their ecosystem, it is pre-installed on the iPhone and they prefer their own API and permissions, which is why iMessage is the most used messaging service in the United States,” said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg as quoted from India Today, Wednesday (3/2).
Zuckerberg also sniffs that Apple is trying to compete with WhatsApp dominance globally. This can be seen from Apple’s new policy which will harm messaging applications such as WhatsApp.
Quoted Business Insider, Apple recently released a special label for third-party apps, which mostly focuses on the metadata collected by the app, rather than message privacy and security.
Regarding the policy, Zuckerberg reminded WhatsApp to be superior to iMessage because it has end-to-end encryption message security features. The end-to-end message encryption feature provides protection that can read messages or videos only by the sender and recipient of the message.
“iMessage keeps a non-end-to-end encrypted backup of messages by default in iCloud unless you disable it,” Zuckerberg said.
Launching Forbes, iMessage is actually also secured with end-to-end encryption. In addition, iOS 14 is claimed to have a security system called Blast Door to protect users from cyber attacks via iMessage messages.
This protection is in charge of scanning incoming messages in order to prevent malicious code being inserted in the message.
Launch appletoolbox, iMessage is Apple’s instant messaging service for devices such as iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Released in 2011 with iOS 5, iMessage allows users to send messages, photos, stickers and more between any Apple device via the Internet.
The main difference between iMessages and SMS is the way of sending data. The SMS uses a cellular connection, bouncing from cell tower to cell tower. Meanwhile, iMessages transfers data using the Internet. So, users need Wi-Fi or cellular data to send messages via iMessage.
IMessage is only compatible with Apple devices. That means users cannot send iMessages to Android users.
