How was Mohamed Al-Fayed?
Mohamed Al-Fayed (1929-2023) came from Egypt. On the streets of the port city of Alexandria, he started simply as a lemonade seller before working his way up and making his fortune in the business world.
A stepping stone to that better life was his brief marriage to the sister of Saudi millionaire and arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi (the name may sound familiar: he had a cousin Jamal Khashoggithe journalist who was killed by a Saudi death squad in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018).
In the 1970s, Al-Fayed moved to the United Kingdom. He was already a well-known figure there when he took over the luxury department store Harrods in 1985. Al-Fayed also owned the Ritz in Paris and Fulham football club.
His name became better known to us when his son Dodi Fayed started a relationship with Princess Diana, shortly after her divorce from Crown Prince Charles. In 1997, the couple died together in a car accident in Paris. According to the French police, the accident was the result of speed and alcohol consumption by the driver, but Mohammed Al-Fayed insisted that the British royal family was behind the accident and said this several times in the media.
