More vaccination sites against COVID-19 were enabled in Ecuador – Ministry of Public Health

Quito, January 14, 2022

In Ecuador, more vaccination points against COVID-19 have been enabled. One of them is located in the coliseum of the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador (PUCE). This joins the more than 150 immunization positions in companies; without forgetting the vaccinations in health centers, universities and others.

José Ruales, Deputy Minister of Governance and Health Surveillance, highlighted the work that was carried out in the PUCE vaccination center months ago, therefore, its reopening is essential to continue with the application of biologicals for the population. In addition, he highlighted the support of the Ecuadorian Business Committee (CEE) during the inoculation process against the disease, after the placement of sites to inoculate their workers and families. “This joint effort shows that together we made it.”

The official also spoke about strengthening work with the comprehensive health network, especially in the coordination of hospital beds, intermediate care and intensive care. “We maintain excellent daily coordination with the members of the comprehensive health network to monitor the response at the hospital level due to the increase in cases. This is how we maintain hospital and intensive care capacity.”

This week, the health authorities showed data that shows the increase in COVID-19 infections. At the end of this week -said Ruales- an estimated 20,000 positive diagnoses.

However, the number of deaths does not report increases, due to positive advances in vaccination. As of Wednesday, January 14, 2022, 12.9 million people have been fully vaccinated in the country. That is, 80.71% of the 16 million people considered for immunization (from 5 years).

The largest number of inoculated is in the group of over 50 years. They exceed 88%; compared to children and adolescents who do not reach 64% (average).

The deputy minister recalled that vaccines are important to prevent serious illness and mortality. Currently, 60% of people who are in Intensive Care Units (ICU) did not have any vaccine and 15% only had access to one. “That is a sign that the doses are effective in preventing severe disease.”

Within this framework, the Ministry of Health has also improved the supply of medicines to health houses. On Monday, January 10, 2022, more than 5.1 million units of drugs were distributed in medical establishments: hospitals and health centers. This ensures timely supply and delivery of medicines to the population.
