Last year, music sellers (again) achieved more sales from vinyl than from CDs, according to annual figures from the NVPI, the industry association for the entertainment industry. Sales of CDs have been declining for years, but fell completely due to the corona lockdowns.
In total, the industry achieved a turnover of 225.8 million euros in 2020, which represents a growth of almost 10 percent. It is the sixth year in a row that sales have increased, but the growth leveled off somewhat compared to 2019.
The industry is now almost entirely dependent on streaming. The market share for this method of music consumption is now 82 percent. In 2020, CDs brought in 16.9 million euros and records 17.1 million euros.
Worldwide sales rose by 7.4 percent, the representative of the international music industry IFPI reports Tuesday. The Netherlands ranks tenth in the world in terms of turnover.
