TikTok could increase its sales with longer videos. One minute is currently the de facto standard for short videos, but even more ads can be accommodated in videos that are three, five or more minutes long.

What is most interesting about videos and much other content on the Internet is how well they can be sold. Information or entertainment only play a role here insofar as content can help to increase the time spent on a platform and ideally trigger a purchase. News media share this property with platforms such as YouTube, Facebook or TikTok.

They’ve been experimenting with longer videos for a long time. Three, five or even ten minute clips will be tested with small groups of TikTok users, as per recent reports emerges.

More time for more money

Currently, the quasi-standard for short videos on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and Co. is just this one minute. In longer clips, however, more ads can be accommodated, which ultimately generate more revenue. According to industry expert Karyn Spencer, tech platforms generally tend to make the most of every possible form of distribution. It is questionable whether TikTok will actually offer users ten-minute videos in the near future, but in principle one should keep in mind that every change made by companies and publishers of content is primarily aimed at maximizing their own sales, but not the needs of the users serve.

Do you prefer short videos on Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, Snapchat or YouTube to longer clips on the well-known platforms?
