With an extraordinary turnout and a radiant sun that accompanied throughout the day, the world-renowned big wave event Lobos Por Siempre 2024 ended this Saturday. Although this year the swells were not perfect for its development, this did not overshadow the impetus of children, young girls, entire families and world-class surfers, who came together to participate in various activities and a team surfing meeting.
On this occasion, the organization and sports committee developed a surfing meeting, generating a team competition, with 7 members each (men and women), with an unusual and very fun modality, where each team had to surf with 7 different boards in a time of 40 minutes per heat, including an innovative variety of boards which generated a great challenge, but at the same time, a bit of entertainment as they were boards not used by surfers, such as a rescue board, Alaia (wooden board used in ancient times), among other objects to slide through the waves.
“Today we surfed with different and unusual boards, in each heat there are women, young people and people over 50 years old competing in the same team. The truth is that it is an event to have a good time, share with friends in the water and celebrate Punta de Lobos, which is a unique place in the world and we must take care of it,” said the outstanding local surfer Diego Medina.
Outside the water and throughout the day, a Surferia was held with various exhibitors, foundations and local businesses linked to sustainability, where the most striking thing was the “Surftrades”, where renowned surfers brought their boards with many stories to exchange among themselves and they could also be sold to visitors who passed by the event.
In addition, recreational activities were held during the day, such as a painting workshop for children implemented by the Municipality of Pichilemu, and a stand with free repair of neoprene suits by Patagonia in order to give them a new useful life and thus generate less waste.
These and other outdoor activities were well received by the public who came to the place, highlighting the volunteer work carried out by the Punta de Lobos Park with a focus on the preservation and conservation of the nature of the place.
“This year, unfortunately, we did not have the big swell to hold the big wave championship, but we still wanted to hold a symbolic event to close the waiting period, where we met with the surfing community and created a very entertaining sporting event, where different conservation activities were also carried out for the Punta de Lobos Park,” said Patricio Mekis, director of Lobos Por Siempre.
