More than two million tickets sold for the Paralympic Games

Paris. Paris 2024 has sold just over two million tickets for the Paralympic Games, organisers announced hours before the opening ceremony on Wednesday.

“More than two million tickets for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games have already been sold, one million of them in just one month,” the Paris 2024 organisers said in a statement.

Organizers said Tuesday that about 500,000 tickets were still to be sold, which, if sold, would put Paris just shy of the record 2.7 million sold for the London 2012 Games, where 97 percent of tickets were snapped up.

At the 2008 Beijing Games, 1.82 million tickets were sold and 1.62 million were distributed to schools by organisers, according to figures from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

2.1 million tickets were sold for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Paris 2024, however, is confident that tickets for the Paralympic Games will sell out, which would be a first.

“We know that we will continue to sell tickets in the coming days, probably until the end of the Games,” said Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet.

“It was the case at the Olympics, we sold tickets until the last day, even in the last hour, and it was very exciting for us to see that the fans were enthusiastic until the end and really wanted to take advantage of the last opportunities.”

“Today’s ticket sales will undoubtedly exceed the figures for Rio,” said Craig Spence, spokesman for the ICC.

More than a month after the Olympic opening ceremony on the Seine, the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games will also take place outside a stadium, this time on the Champs-Élysées and Place de la Concorde, later on Wednesday.
