Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for taking bribes from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.
Toledo, who is 78 years old, was the president of Peru from 2001 to 2006. During his presidency, he is said to have received $35 million from the construction company in exchange for a major contract. In exchange for the bribe, Odebrecht was commissioned to build a road connecting southern Peru to Brazil.
Odebrecht, now known as Nonovo, admitted in 2016 to bribing officials in several countries. Also Dutch companies suspected of involvement in the main corruption case.
The former president lived in the United States for several years. He was arrested there in 2019 at the request of Peru, after which he was placed under house arrest. Last year Toledo was exported to Peru. He has denied the allegations of money laundering.
Prisons for former presidents
Toledo is not the only vice president in prison. A special prison was built on the outskirts of Lima for the former presidents. Former president Pedro Castillo is also in custody after trying to dissolve parliament just before impeachment proceedings against him. As a result he was arrested and detained.
Last month, former President Alberto Fujimori, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in the murder of 25 Peruvians in the 1990s, and was released early last year because he has health problems.
Another former president of Peru, Alan Garcia, was also suspected of taking bribes from Odebrecht. Garciá was shot in the head during his arrest and died from his injuries. The current president, Dina Doluarte, is also accused of taking bribes. The Public Prosecutor of Peru submitted in May of this year conviction against her.
