More than twenty arrests in riots in and around Malieveld in The Hague | NOW

The police carried out more than twenty arrests on and around Malieveld in The Hague on Sunday. This happened in the riots that broke out when the demonstration against cabinet policy was dissolved by order of the mayor because the protesters did not comply with the corona rules.

During the riots, heavy fireworks were thrown at the police, after which it was decided to deploy the riot police. A water cannon and police dogs were also used.

A police officer fired a warning shot when a dog handler was harassed by protesters during a charge. His dog was kicked and he was attacked by a fighting dog belonging to one of the rioters.

In addition, two people were injured when police dogs were used against them for refusing to leave. In another incident, a woman was hit by a riot bus. “This was emphatically not the intention,” said the police.

The action on the Malieveld in The Hague, organized by the Netherlands in Resistance, was to start around 2 p.m. and a maximum of two hundred people were allowed to come. But an hour earlier, more than 200 protesters had already been present, which increased to several thousand during the afternoon.

The police asked the protesters to leave the Malieveld around 4 p.m. A number of people did not respond to this and subsequently used violence against officers.
