Two and a half weeks before the US presidential election, more than ten million voters have already cast their votes. Figures from the University of Florida’s Election Research Institute show that 10.1 million US citizens voted early, including over three million in crucial swing states.
Record turnout in Georgia and North Carolina
A new record in voter turnout has already been reached, particularly in the southern US state of Georgia, where early voting has been possible since Tuesday. In neighboring North Carolina, voter turnout through in-person voting and postal voting is also high.
Battle for the swing states
Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, the two main opponents in the presidential race, held campaign appointments on Friday in Michigan, one of the decisive swing states. More than 800,000 people have already voted there. Particularly in this state, with its large Arab electorate, the government’s position on the Gaza war could play a role.
Prospects for the election
The election on November 5th is seen as a landmark for the future of the USA and its foreign policy. Due to the US electoral system, the decision is likely to be made in a few states – the so-called swing states. Michigan, with its 15 electors, is one of the particularly hotly contested states.
