More than one million jobs were created in July; 8 out of 10 were informal

Mexico City. Employment in Mexico increased in July, driven by job creation in the agricultural sector. However, eight out of 10 jobs created in the seventh month of the year were in informal employment, revealed the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

According to the National Employment and Occupation Survey (Enoe), carried out by Inegi, it was estimated that the employed population in the country rose to 60.3 million people in July 2024, which represented an increase of one million 377 thousand jobs compared to last June, being the highest monthly job creation since October 2020. This behavior was almost entirely explained by male employment, which grew by 877 thousand 726 jobs on a monthly basis; while female positions increased by 499 thousand 277.

The Enoe estimated that the employed population in the country’s primary sector (agriculture and livestock) increased by 890,476 people, while in the secondary sector (industry) 141,093 jobs were added in July compared to June. Meanwhile, job creation in the service and commercial sector amounted to 317,459 positions in the reference period.

According to Inegi, formal employment rose to 27.4 million people in July, which represented an increase of 226,724 jobs compared to June of this year. Meanwhile, informal employment occupied 32.9 million individuals in July, which represented 1,150,279 more jobs in one month.

Last June, 863,862 jobs were lost, which led to the destruction of jobs during the first half of 2024; with the recovery of employment in July, 1,180,304 jobs have been created in the first seven months of the year.

Unemployment rate increases

Compared to July 2023, employment in the country increased by 875,967 people during the seventh month of 2024.

Within the population, the number of underemployed people, those who declared that they had the need and availability to work more hours, was 4.9 million (8.1 percent of the employed population). This meant an increase of 63 thousand people compared to the same month a year earlier.

In the reference month, the unemployed population was 1.8 million people and the unemployment rate was 2.9 percent of the economically active population (EAP). Compared to July 2023, the unemployed population decreased by 101,590 people and the unemployment rate was lower by 0.2 percentage points.

In the seventh month of this year and with seasonally adjusted figures, the unemployment rate was similar to that of the previous month. The underemployment rate increased by 0.2 percentage points.
