More than half of adults in Drenthe are overweight

53.5 percent of adult Drenthe was overweight last year. Only in South Limburg (54 percent) is that percentage higher. Drenthe is followed by the region of Twente, where 53.2 percent of adults are overweight.

In addition to the fact that more than half of the adult population of Drenthe weigh too much, fifteen percent are even seriously overweight, or obese. This percentage is in line with the national average. Once again, South Limburg is at the top of that list. In that region, more than 17 percent of adults are obese.

There are also regions where the percentage of overweight people is lower than the national average. In the Amsterdam region, for example, this concerns 40 percent of the over 18s. Also in Utrecht, Haaglanden and Kennemerland, on average, fewer people are overweight than in the rest of the country.

More and more Dutch people are overweight

According to the CBS, the group of overweight people has grown considerably in recent decades. In the early 1980s, more than a third of the population was overweight. Until about the mid-1910s, this share rose to about fifty percent. In recent years, the percentage of Dutch people who are overweight has remained virtually stable.

Yet more than half of moderately overweight adults are satisfied with what they see on the scale, according to figures from the statistical office. This is about a quarter of people who are seriously overweight. This number has grown from six years ago.
