More than half a million people without power due to storm in New England – NBC New England

More than 414,000 people were without power in Massachusetts on Wednesday morning when a nor’easter hit the region with downpours and high winds.

Power outages increased dramatically over the course of Wednesday morning. The number of people who were without power tripled in several hours, from 135,229 at 4 a.m. to 496,761 at 10:30 a.m.

In Connecticut right now, Eversource is reporting just over 6,000 outages and United Illuminating reports approximately 3,850 outages.

Eversource estimates that there could be between 40,000 and 80,000 power outages.

Meanwhile, in Rhode Island, National Grid reported that about 91,000 customers in Rhode Island were without power, with the largest outages in Pawtucket, Cranston, West Warwick and Bristol, according to WJAR.

In Maine, Central Power reports 26,541 power outages in the state. In New Hampshire, various companies report a total of 6,203 outages and in Vermont 108 are reported.

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker said he met with his administration’s public safety and emergency response officials Wednesday morning to discuss the storm’s impacts and response efforts. He said his administration is working with utilities to speed up recovery times, but damages are still being assessed.

At the height of the storm, wind gusts reached nearly 100 mph. The wind is expected to subside as the morning progresses, but it was still blowing around 70 mph outside the Cape early Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service urged people not to travel Wednesday morning, calling the conditions “dangerous,” with hurricane-force winds blowing across southeastern Massachusetts.

Debris covered roads throughout Chatham after the storm knocked down trees and branches. About half the city was without power Wednesday morning, along with thousands more on the Cape.

In West Barnstable, a woman was trapped in her car after a tree fell on her while driving on Route 6A. The car ended up on top of a live power line. Police were able to rescue her from the car safely. No one was injured.

The Massachusetts Steamship Authority suspended all services until further notice Wednesday morning, citing power problems and “extremely dangerous” travel conditions. The agency urged people not to try to go to its terminals.

Much of the southern coast suffered the brunt of the storm and faces significant power outages. The entire city of Cohasset was without power Wednesday morning. Everyone without a generator woke up in the dark. A power pole broke on North Main Street, which was blocked by police.

Meanwhile, police officers and firefighters in Duxbury were handling a “very high volume” of emergency calls after about 37% of the city lost power.

Numerous trees and cables fell, police said, as wind gusts reached 65 mph near the Powder Point Bridge. The city’s Public Works Department and utility crews were working to clear the roads.

“Be very careful if you need to be on the roads for any reason,” the Duxbury Fire Department wrote on Twitter. “Many roads are impassable due to falling trees.”

The Brewster Police Department asked people to “be very careful when traveling” as they faced multiple road closures and power outages in the city.

High winds damaged trees and utilities in several areas, the city police department wrote on Facebook. Road closures included: Rt. 6A near Ocean Edge, Rt. 6A near route. 124, Lower Rd. Near Moldstead Ln. and Rt. 6A near the Library. Eversource was aware of the situation, police said.

Power outages were also reported in Brockton, where a large tree smashed into power lines, making Ash Street in the # 686 area impassable. The National Grid teams were on the scene. Police asked people to avoid the area.

North Shore also suffered storm damage. The waves crashed over the boardwalk at Lynn Shore Drive in Lynn and a large tree was uprooted on Erie Street.
