More than half a million Indians flee severe flooding

More than half a million people have been displaced by severe flooding in northeast India. The northeastern state of Assam has been plagued by heavy rains for days. The Indian authorities report that at least 11 people have been killed.

A combination of prolonged heavy rainfall in recent days and torrential downpours yesterday has caused a major river, the Brahmaputra, to overflow its banks. More than 1,500 villages have been flooded. More rain is expected in the coming days. The water level in the Brahmaputra is expected to rise further, authorities said.

Heavy rainfall is hitting the area earlier than usual. Officially, it is still pre-monsoon time in India, a period between the drought and the rainy season. The rainy season usually starts in June.
