At the Day Hospital, in the Germán Urquidi Maternal and Child Hospital area, free chemotherapy is carried out to combat cancer, enabling the recovery of hundreds of women who are fighting for their lives, according to a press release.
The head nurse of the Gynecological Oncology Unit at the Materno Hospital, Verónica Alanes, reported in an interview on the Government’s television program Unir, Trabajador y Crecer that between 2023 and 2024, 1,814 free chemotherapy sessions were performed at the outpatient chemotherapy center, also known as the Day Hospital.
“In 2023 we had 1,070 chemotherapy sessions and this year 744, making a total of 1,814 treatments,” he said.
He specified that the only requirement to access care is registration in the Unified Health System (SUS).
The center currently has a preparation area for receiving therapies, a flow hood, pressurized air systems, beds and an exclusive room with chairs for treatments, which do not require hospitalization, allowing patients to return home the same day.
It was reported that 1,651 surgeries were performed at the Materno during the last two years, of which 282 were oncological surgeries, 146 were gynecological surgeries, and 1,223 were obstetric surgeries.
“This year we have 155 new cases of cancer patients, 88 women have already undergone surgery,” he said.
Among the most frequently treated cases are patients diagnosed with breast, cervical and ovarian cancer.
However, Alanes insisted that prevention and treatment, through timely diagnosis, can save the lives of patients, considering that cancer is a treatable disease in its initial stages.
In this regard, the departmental representative of cancer patients, Carla Claure, highlighted the quality and warmth of the care received at the Day Hospital by the “companions warriors” who fight to have a quality of life, despite their illness and economic, social and family difficulties.
