More than 80 dead from US tornadoes

In the US, a historic series of tornadoes leaves at least 84 dead, numerous missing and devastation in five eastern states of the country. It is the most intense series of tornadoes on record. It started on Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday it has washed away entire populations and caused untold damage. At least 6 people died in an Amazon warehouse in Illinois after its collapse.

More than 70 people have died in Kentucky alone, many of them working in a candle factory. The death toll, according to the Kentucky state governor, could exceed one hundred.

On Saturday, dozens of agents assisted in rescue efforts looking for more survivors.

The longest tornado recorded in history was 1925. It traveled about 350 kilometers and left almost 700 dead and 2,000 injured.

The unprecedented tornado this weekend would have traveled almost 400 kilometers. The storm is most notable for having occurred in December, when typically colder weather limits tornadoes.

President Joe Biden approved an emergency disaster declaration for Kentucky on Saturday and has pledged to support victims and survivors.
