More than 700 detainees are still in custody after the unrest in Brazil

The administration of prisons in the capital has published a list with the names of 763 prisoners.

It is not yet clear whether the list includes all detainees still in custody in connection with Sunday’s riots.

In total, police have arrested at least 1,500 people, but many people, including mothers with young children and the elderly, have already been released.

Protesting the January 1 inauguration of Luis Inacio Lula da Silva as president, Bolsonaro supporters raided the National Congress and Supreme Court buildings, as well as the presidential palace, on Sunday.

The intruders ransacked the premises, breaking furniture and damaging art objects. They also beat up five journalists.

After Sunday’s violence, the Supreme Court ordered the demolition of protest camps, including the one near the army headquarters in Brasilia, within 24 hours. Around 1,200 people were arrested during the police operation. About 230 more protesters were arrested on Sunday.

Bolsonaro, who traveled to the US state of Florida after losing the presidential election, condemned the “invasion and destruction of public buildings” on Twitter, but rejected Lula’s allegations that he incited his supporters to do so.

In the second round of Brazil’s presidential election on October 30, left-wing politician Lula won by a narrow margin, defeating far-right Bolsonaro. Lula received 50.9% of the vote and Bolsonaro 49.1%.

Bolsonaro has so far not unequivocally admitted defeat.

Brazil’s Supreme Court on Monday suspended Brazil’s governor, Ibanez Rocha, from office for 90 days for doing nothing to ensure public safety despite all indications that violence would break out. Rocha is considered a Bolsonaro ally.
