More than 68,000 companies were created in Peru between the months of October and December 2023

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported that between October and December 2023, 68,847 companies were created, while 68,326 closed their activities, registering a net variation of 521 companies. This was made known through the Technical Report on Business Demography in Peru, its main source being the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT).

It should be noted that the registration rate, which relates the companies created in the third quarter of 2023 with the business stock at the end of the period, and the business mortality rate, which shows the relationship between the companies that stopped operating with the stock at At the end of the period in question, they constituted 2.1% of the total each.

Likewise, the INEI indicated that the number of active companies registered in the Central Directory of Companies and Establishments in the fourth quarter of 2023 increased 6.1% compared to the same quarter of 2022.

The INEI also indicated that, in the quarter under study, 68,847 companies were created, a figure higher by 4.0% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The largest number of companies created occurred in the activities of retail trade (25.7%), wholesale trade (13.7%), other services that include the activities of personal services, human health, associations, real estate, sports, leisure and recreational, educational and financial (13.6%), services provided to companies (9.8%), food and beverage service activities (8.6%), manufacturing industries (6.9 %), and transportation and storage (6.7%).

25.9% of casualties due to temporary or permanent closure of their activities were concentrated in retail trade

In the fourth quarter of 2023, the number of company closures registered a growth of 25.9%, compared to the similar period of the previous year.

According to economic activity, the highest percentage of closed companies was recorded in retail trade (22.3%), followed by wholesale trade (17.5%), other services (14.3%), manufacturing industries (11 .6%), transportation and storage (8.9%), and services provided to companies (7.8%).

In Lima, 28,074 companies were created

In the fourth quarter of 2023, 28,074 companies were created in Lima, a figure that represented 40.8% of the total, which indicates that out of every ten new companies, four started activities in this jurisdiction. Likewise, 51,947 companies in Lima canceled their activities, which represented 76.0% of the total number of companies.

It is important to inform that SUNAT continued with the verification and registration process of casualties during 2023, which began in July of the same year. This verification implies that, although the casualties were registered during the period of the operation, they may have occurred prior to the registration period.

Natural persons with businesses represented 58.3% of the total companies created in the fourth quarter of 2023

According to the form of business organization, natural persons with businesses represented 58.3%, followed by those incorporated as a public limited company (18.0%) and those that operated under the modality of an individual limited liability company (14.6%). %), among the most significant. Similar behavior was observed in companies that had to close their activities.

One in two companies created as natural persons in the country are led by women in the fourth quarter of 2023

In Peru, 40,142 companies were registered as natural persons, of which 20,674 companies were run by women, representing 51.5% of the total; which showed a greater participation of women in the conduct of this type of ventures.

Women led the management of companies created as natural persons in 19 departments

In 19 departments there was a greater participation of women who run companies registered as natural persons, highlighting Tumbes with 57.1%, Moquegua and Tacna (56.6% each), and Cusco (56.3%), among the most representative.

On the other hand, business management by men predominated in the departments of Apurímac (54.9%), Cajamarca (53.8%), Amazonas (52.6%), Pasco (52.2%), Huánuco (51.9%) and La Libertad (51.7%).

Eight out of 10 mining and quarrying companies created as natural persons were led by men

According to economic activity, men represented a higher percentage in leading ventures in productive units related to the exploitation of mines and quarries (80.9%), construction (80.2%), transportation and storage (78.4% ), information and communications (74.1%), vehicle sales and repair (72.0%), and agriculture, livestock, forestry and fishing (66.7%), among the most notable.

Likewise, women had a greater participation in the area of ​​beauty salons (69.1%), food and beverage service activities (62.6%), retail trade (60.8%), wholesale trade (55.5%) and accommodation activities (52.3%).
