NEW YORK – A bus bound for Niagara Falls crashed on the New York State Highway in central New York on Saturday, sending more than 50 people to hospitals, state police and a hospital confirmed.

The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. Saturday on the west side of the highway near Weedsport, a town about 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Syracuse. About 57 people were on board, state Police said.

All the passengers, including the driver, were transported to hospitals in varying conditions, from minor to serious injuries.

The bus was heading from the Fishkill area of the Hudson Valley to Niagara Falls, and the passengers included children, Auburn Community Hospital spokesman Matthew Chadderdon said.

The Auburn hospital received about 27 patients, including the driver, where they were assessing people’s conditions, authorities said. Three were transferred to Upstate University Hospital, the area’s premier trauma center. The designation denotes a hospital specifically equipped to handle injuries.

Upstate, in Syracuse, received 25 patients in total, spokesman Darryl Geddes said. He was unable to immediately provide information on their conditions.

The westbound lanes were closed for a time, but reopened in the late afternoon.

It was not immediately clear which company or agency owned the bus, or what caused the accident.

The case is under investigation.
