More than 50% of the families served by the Red Cross have to choose between buying food or heating their home | Radio Mallorca | Present

More than 50% of the families served by the Red Cross in the Islands have to choose between buy food or heat their homes. In 2020, the number of people served by the entity increased, which received energy saving kits. About 1,200 people have received help in the past year.

The energy poverty related to the ability of households to maintain an adequate temperature in their homes affects 9 percent of the population of the Islands. From the entity they ensure that if the socio-economic situation of families continues to worsen, energy poverty is going to be an increasingly evident reality.

To support people affected by energy poverty, Creu Roja develops different actions that range from attention to urgent needs, aid for the payment of bills, the delivery of energy efficiency kits, telephone advice calls or participation in household savings workshops.

As we say, in 2020 the number of people assisted by the Balearic Red Cross increased notably, which received energy saving kits compared to the previous year, from 113 to 498 families.

The organization also supports families with more difficulties in paying for basic supplies of the home like electricity or gas. Last year, it delivered about 1,067 financial benefits to more than 386 vulnerable families worth more than one hundred thousand euros. In this area, the number of beneficiaries increases, going from 166 families served in 2019 to 386 in 2020, which represents an increase of 232% compared to 2019.
