Mexico City. More than $5 million in retroactive payments and benefits for workers have been recovered through the USMCA’s Rapid Labor Response Mechanism (MLRR) under the administration of Katherine Tai, as United States Trade Representative (USTR). .
Since 2021, the United States has invoked this mechanism on 22 occasions, which have benefited 30,000 workers who have improved their working conditions, according to the USTR.
Labor complaints have been triggered in facilities spanning various industries, including automotive, clothing, mining, food manufacturing and services, he said.
In a report on her third year as Trade Representative, Ambassador Tai noted that the MLRR ensured that unfairly dismissed workers were reinstated in their jobs, and helped ensure free and fair elections in which workers elected independent unions to represent them. .
Although some cases are still ongoing, he noted, 17 have already led to comprehensive inter-U.S. remediation plans.
He added that 11 labor complaints included back pay to workers, nine included worker reinstatements, nine resulted in independent unions representing workers at the facilities and many resulted in successful negotiations for higher wages, training on workers’ rights and better facility policies.
