41 policemen were injured in New Year’s Eve attacks in Berlin, according to the latest police reports.
The police press secretary was unable to provide information on the severity of the injured officers’ injuries on Monday evening.
In connection with these incidents, 159 people, mostly young people, were arrested.
In addition to the attacks on law enforcement, investigations are underway for arson, violation of the explosives law and disturbing the peace.
Firefighters said at least 38 incidents of physical assaults had been documented. According to information available on Sunday, 15 people were injured.
The police said nearly 1,300 more policemen were brought in to maintain order in the German capital during the anniversary celebration. The intensity of these attacks is not comparable to that of previous years, the police admitted on Sunday in a preliminary report on the New Year celebrations.
Police said groups of people repeatedly attempted to erect barricades on the streets of Berlin.
The Berlin police union said on Monday that public use of pyrotechnics showed the need for a far-reaching ban on firecrackers.
The Berlin-Brandenburg firefighters union said there were also attacks on emergency service workers, one of whom was taken to hospital.
The cars of these services were pelted with beer cans and fire extinguishers, firecrackers were fired at the rescuers and their cars were looted.
