Democratic Mayor Eric Adams described the Republican governors of Texas and Arizona as “cowards” for sending massively undocumented immigrants on buses to NYC and Washington DC from the southern border, most of them Hispanics who are crossing from various countries via Mexico.
The situation has overwhelmed the homeless shelters in New York, increasing the crisis of homelessness in the city, which many also associate with street violence. For this reason, earlier this week Adams had demanded increased federal resources to President Joe Biden. But until now The president, who is resting due to COVID, has not responded publicly.
“Our country is the home of the free, the land of the brave,” Adams said during a news conference on the topic at City Hall on Thursday. “We don’t become cowardly and turn away people who seek help.”
“New York is going to do its part, but now we have an overloaded shelter system,” Adams had said Tuesday. When pressed for details about the arrival of immigrants in NYC, he commented: “We need to investigate how they give them one-way tickets” to come.
The governors of Texas and Arizona, Greg Abbott and Doug Ducey, have admitted sending immigrants to the capital of the nation in rejection of President Biden’s immigration policies, but have denied that they are being sent to New York.
Adams doesn’t believe them. An Abbott spokesman reiterated Thursday that it is not Texas that is sending immigrants to NYC, but suggested that the Biden administration is to blame. “Mayor Adams should check with President Biden if his administration is the one dumping immigrants into his cityas they have been doing in Texas border cities for months,” said the governor’s press secretary, Renae Eze.

On Sunday, the Democratic Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser called the situation “a very important problem.” “For sure we have asked the federal government to work across state lines to prevent people from actually being tricked into getting on buses,” he said on the show. Face the Nation/CBS.
The escalating war of words between the country’s regional leaders came after Adams first accused the two governors Tuesday of sending immigrants to New York City. But they countered by accusing Biden of making “unfounded political accusations” and saying that the NYC mayor “needs to get the facts straight.”
That same day, the Republican Governor of Arizona He wrote on Twitter: “Mayor Adams needs to get the facts straight and pay more attention to what is really going on because the security of our nation depends on it.” “The state of Arizona provides voluntary transportation for asylum seekers only to Washington DC, not to New York,” he added.
NYC Department of Social Services (DHS) Commissioner Gary Jenkins said the latest estimate is that more than 3,000 immigrants have arrived in the city since May, included “a significant increase in families with children.”
A migrant who fled the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, who spoke this week with New York Post outside a homeless intake center in the Bronx, she said immigration officials in San Antonio, Texas, made an appointment for her, her husband and their four children to meet with an attorney in that county so they could could apply for asylum, even they did not ask to be sent to New York.
Since October 1, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has apprehended more than 1.7 million migrants along the border with Mexico.according to recently published official figures.
