More than 300 Haitian immigrants detained off the coast of Florida


In total, 331 immigrants were detained near Cayo Largo, exemplifying the increase in people trying to arrive in flimsy boats.

More than 300 Haitian immigrants were detained Saturday afternoon by US authorities off the coast of the Florida Keys.

From them, 218 were picked up on Coast Guard vesselsafter being rescued from the crowded sailboat in which they were spotted by security forces near Cayo Largo, the coast guard reported this Sunday.

Another group of 113 Haitians who jumped from the boat and swam to shore were made available to the Border Patrol.reported the head of this federal agency in Miami, Walter Slosar.

After being evaluated on land, two of the undocumented immigrants had to be transferred to a local hospital due to dehydration, reported the officer, who added that an investigation is ongoing.

Slosar pointed out that With Saturday’s interception, there are 16 arrivals of immigrants to Florida by sea in a two-day period.during which 263 people have been made available to the Border Patrol.

On Saturday, the Coast Guard reported the repatriation of 53 Cubans who were detained in different interceptions off the Florida coast.

The Coast Guard also continues today the search for five missing people, presumably Cubans, after a boat with 15 people on board capsized off Sugarloaf Key on Friday, an incident in which two people died.

The Coast Guard reported that they went to the scene that day after receiving several notices from the sinister vessel and managed to rescue eight people, six of whom had to be transferred to health centers.

Since October 1 of that year, when the current fiscal year began, more than 3,739 people from the Caribbean island who traveled by sea have been detainedaccording to figures from the US Coast Guard.
