After the entry into force on Monday of the compulsory vaccination against Covid-19 in New York, more than 24,000 employees, who refuse to receive their doses, have not been able to find their place of work, according to the latest figures provided by authorities.
On October 20, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a vaccination order that required city employees to be vaccinated by November 1.
Since the announcement, only 14% of employees have received at least the first dose of their Covid vaccine, while thousands more are placed on unpaid leave.
According to the same statistics released by city authorities, nearly 91% of employees complied with the vaccination order, receiving at least the first dose.

Among those employees who fiercely oppose compulsory vaccination are those of the Police and Fire Departments. Several members of these professional bodies took part in demonstrations to protest against this decision which “goes against their right to choose”.
Last September, the New York State Department of Health issued a similar mandate requiring employees in the sector to be vaccinated.
According to the New York State Governor’s office, 84% of hospital staff, 81% of staff at all adult care facilities, and 77% of all staff in nursing homes have been fully immunized.
A similar mandate was made public at the level of the Department of Education, prompting several protests.
For observers, these mandates imposed on New York will serve as a “test” to see if other American states will take a similar step as part of efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
