More than 2,250 corona patients in hospital

On Saturday there were 2,255 corona patients in Belgian hospitals, 381 of which were in intensive care. This is evident from the online dashboard of health institute Sciensano on Sunday morning.

351 new corona patients were hospitalized on Saturday, 207 were discharged. On average, there were an average of 214.3 new hospital admissions per day in the past week, an increase of 80 percent compared to the previous week.

During the last week for which consolidated data are available, from October 7 to 14, there were an average of 28 deaths each day from corona infection. That’s almost 13 more per day than the week before.

The number of diagnosed infections in the same period amounted to an average of 7,399 per day, an increase of 88 percent compared to the previous week. The number of tests also rose to an average of 50,991 per day (+36 percent).

Not a new day record

The last day for which consolidated data is available, Wednesday, there were 9,579 new infections. That is not a new daily record: more than 10,000 infections were confirmed for the first time on Tuesday.

Waiting for impact measures

On Friday, a series of new measures were announced to curb the crisis. However, the consequences of this will only be noticeable in the statistics in more than a week. The continued increase is therefore no surprise. In explaining the measures, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open VLD) already pointed out that we would see a further increase in the figures in the coming days.
