Pele’s coffin was placed in the “Santos” stadium for 24 hours, but after the public farewell, the deceased was carried to the cemetery by fire engine, according to Brazilian traditions. Thousands of fans paraded through the streets of crowded cities and even the president of Brazil, Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, came to Santúsa to personally pay homage to the great athlete.
During the parade of honor through the streets of Santusa, Pelé’s funeral procession stopped at several important places in his life, including the house of the still alive and centenary mother of the footballer, Celeste Arantes.
The end point of the procession was the Ecumenical Cemetery, where Pele’s coffin was placed in a 10-story columbarium. This cemetery entered the Guinness Book of Records as the highest cemetery in the world.
