More than 2,000 corona deaths in US, no mandatory quarantine yet NOW

The number of coronavirus deaths in the United States has risen to more than 2,000. US President Donald Trump issued a travel warning to the states of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut to prevent further spread of the virus. New York in particular is currently hard hit.

In the US, more than 2,100 people have now died from the effects of the COVID-19 virus. The number of deaths has doubled in the past two days. Counts show that there are now more than 122,000 people tested positive in the US. This makes it the country with the most infections worldwide.

About a quarter of those killed are from New York State. Trump said on Twitter on Saturday about considering a mandatory quarantine for New York and two border states of New Jersey and Connecticut. “I am considering quarantining for the hot spots in development. A decision will be made quickly,” he wrote.

A few hours later, however, the American president already indicated that he did not think it was necessary to perform mandatory quarantine for the time being. Trump came to that conclusion after consulting with a coronavirus working group from the White House and the governors of the three states.

Trump has, however, asked the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to issue a strict travel warning for the region. The CDC has warned residents of the states not to travel unnecessarily for the next fourteen days.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
