More than 20 million debit card payments on Saturday before lockdown | Financial

At the busiest time of the day, around 2:45 pm, 860 debit card payments were made per second. Saturday’s numbers are not high enough to break records.

Last year the lockdown started on Tuesday 15 December. The Monday before that, there were 40% more transactions and turnover was 75% more than an average Monday. This equates to approximately 17.6 million transactions and €546 million in revenue.

Last Saturday was also the last Saturday before Christmas this year. Last year, the Netherlands was already in lockdown on that day and essential stores turned around €356 million in turnover via debit card payments. A year earlier, Saturday, December 21, 2019, 22 million transactions were made and €703 million in revenue was generated. That Saturday, about 975 transactions per second were made around 4:15 PM.
