MADRID, Apr 12. (EUROPA PRESS) –
At least 2.65 million vehicles do not have compulsory insurance in Spain, which represents 7.7% of the car fleet and a proportion that has increased by 16% in the last year, according to the study ‘Vehicles’ Zombies’: Uninsured cars in Spain. Problems and accidents (2010-2019) ‘of Línea Directa.
The results of this investigation were presented this Monday by the director of People, Communication and Sustainability of Línea Directa Aseguradora, Mar Garre, who stressed that the objective of the investigation is “to highlight the dangers and problems involved in circulating without having compulsory insurance “.
In this sense, the results of the report suggest that the aging of the automobile fleet, with 12.3 years on average in Spain, together with the unfavorable economic environment experienced during the last decade, has been able to increase the dimensions of the problem.
In addition, he points out among the reasons the ignorance about the obligatory nature of the insurance and a certain sloppiness in the procedures, since many owners do not renew the policies of the vehicles they do not use or do not cancel them in the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) when detach from them. The rebound in this phenomenon experienced in the last year places the proportion of uninsured vehicles at 2010 levels, one of the highest in the decade.
By type of vehicle, the study points out that cars lead the list of ‘zombie vehicles’ with more than 1.8 million uninsured, followed by trucks and vans with 0.4 million, and then two-wheelers (0.3 million) and trailers (50,000).
The study includes a map of the territorial distribution of non-insurance in Spain by crossing figures from the official park file of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) with the Information File of Insured Vehicles (FIVA).
Thus, the largest number of uninsured vehicles are located in the most touristy areas, with many second homes, a high presence of two wheels, which are more linked to temporary use. Specifically, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia lead the ranking of the non-insurance of vehicles, all well above the national average, located at 7.7%. On the other hand, there are Aragón, La Rioja and Castilla y León, where the highest proportion of insured vehicles has been registered.
MORE THAN 300,000 ACCIDENTS IN TEN YEARS
The investigation reveals that, in the last ten years, vehicles without an insurance policy have produced more than 300,000 accidents; and in the last year there were more than 20,000 accidents with uninsured cars.
Regarding the consequences, accidents against an uninsured car have slower resolution of claims (12% more time), there is twice the possibility of injuries and they register a cost that, in comparable coverage, can become twice that of conventional accidents.
Finally, according to data from the General Directorate of Traffic, each year almost 130,000 fines are imposed for lacking insurance or driving without it, a figure that is twice the number of complaints imposed for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs combined. Almost 50% of the drivers who were fined were circulating at the time of the sanction that they are not cars.
