More than 1,500 violations were found against rules regarding night flights

The federal ombudsman advocates a stricter approach to night-time cargo flights in particular.

Last year, the federal ombudsman for Zaventem airport identified more than 1,500 suspected violations of the rules regarding night flights. Most had to do with planes taking off or landing when they were not allowed to do so at night, for example because the planes make too much noise. This would mainly concern old cargo planes. “63 percent of the cargo aircraft operating at Brussels Airport are from before 2000,” says ombudsman Philippe Touwaide.

Last year, the ombudsman service received a total of 28,893 complaints from 4,736 people. This concerns approximately the same number of complaints as in 2022. (blg, kba)
