A man in Guyana was sentenced to 16 years in prison for the murder of a Cuban citizen, who left behind his partner and two minor daughters on the Island.
This is one of the murderers of Ofredis Duarte Campos, a 35-year-old man who was murdered in February 2020when he resisted an assault in Georgetown, the country’s capital.
On that occasion, it was learned that the man was shot dead by two motorists who approached him while he was on his way to his job as a butcher on Church Street.
A police report cited by the local press indicates that the crime took place around 6:44 am, when the victim was walking along Cummings Street, between Middle and Quamina streets.
The pair of criminals approached on a motorcycle and tried to snatch a backpack, however, Duarte reacted quickly and managed to grab his belongings. This triggered a fight between the Cuban and the thieves.
One of the robbers ended up pulling out a firearm and shot Duarte multiple times, escaping the scene shortly after. The Cuban ended up lying in the street until someone called an ambulance.
Duarte was rushed to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), but did not survive due to the severity of his injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival.
The defendant was identified as Patrick Felix Smith, 28 years old, who appeared in court on Tuesday, February 6. There, the subject pleaded guilty to a charge of capital murder, for which Judge Simone Morris-Ramlall sentenced him to 16 years in prison.
Smith was the driver of the motorcycle, and according to authorities, his companion would have been the one who shot Duarte after the physical altercation.
The Guyanese press has not revealed the identity of the shooter, nor has it mentioned whether this person was also arrested.
Duarte was originally from the municipality of Bejucal, in the province of Mayabeque, and left behind two young daughters.
“He left the house to go to work and then I get a call saying he was robbed and killed. When I arrived at the place, I saw him on the ground covered in blood. “He was dead,” an uncle of the deceased told the media. Kaieteur News.
